In
order to live a long fulfilling life, maintaining a certain level of health and
fitness is quite important. Mental and physical well-being is an important determinant
of our quality of life. There are various ways of attaining good health and
this article discusses easy techniques and small lifestyle changes that you can
make in order to achieve a better, healthier lifestyle.
1.Say Good Morning With Lemon Water
Lemon water is
easy to prepare and has a couple of health benefits. It’s as simple as waking
up and squeezing some lemon into a tall glass of water. The mixture helps
improve your immunity because of the vitamin C and encourages digestion. Many
people feel tired because they are dehydrated, so this is an easy way to make
you drink more water. But remember, lemon has citric acid, which can erode
tooth enamel. Try drinking lemon water with a straw and rinse your mouth
afterwards to avoid the citric acid effects.
2. Go to Sleep Without Sheep
Instead
of counting fence-hurdling sheep to fall asleep, just wear socks. Swiss
researchers found that people fell asleep quickest when their hands and feet
were warmest.
This
happens because warm feet and hands cause blood vessels to enlarge, allowing
more heat to escape your body, which in turn lowers your core temperature
faster and causes you to nod off sooner.
The
researchers say putting on socks may help you fall asleep in half the time it
normally takes.
3. Don’t Forget Your Lunch
Thinking
about what you ate for lunch could keep you from bingeing on afternoon snacks.
In a study, subjects were told they were taste-testing three different types of
salted popcorn. They were encouraged to eat as much as they
wanted.Interestingly, those who were first asked to recall exactly what they
had eaten for lunch consumed 30 percent less popcorn than those who didn’t
review their lunch menu beforehand. The researchers say that taking a few
seconds to remember what you had during a recent meal might enhance awareness
of how satiating the food was, which then might reduce future noshing.
4 Stop Smoking and Start Living
Did
you know that in the U.S. alone, tobacco kills the equivalent of three jumbo
jets full of people crashing every day, with no survivors.
Here
is a sampling of the serious, life-threatening conditions that are the direct
result of smoking:
- Heart disease
- Breathing problems
- Lung cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Emphysema
Moreover,
the science is strong and consistent that when you smoke, the people around
you, especially children, are at risk for developing serious health problems.
5.
Take the stairs.
The
next time you're going to a higher floor, bypass the elevator and climb the
stairs instead. You'll get your blood pumping, exercise your lungs and work the
muscles in your lower body.
"It’s
a great way to add physical activity to your day without having to block out
time to exercise," Hooberman says. "I tell my patients to try to walk
10,000 steps each day. Taking the stairs is great exercise and counts toward
that total."
All
of these small steps can add up to a healthier you.
